What Skates are Right for Me?

by Caroline Millicent on June 22, 2020

There are a lot of awesome choices out there and navigating straight to the right choice for yourself as an individual person with an individual skillset or specific skate goals can feel really overwhelming.

Roller skates are just like shoes. The price tends to correlate directly to the quality of the skate and ultimately the kind of skating experience it will tailor you to have. The facts are simply: the higher the price, the longer they will last you and the more comfortable they will feel on your feet for hours as you learn skills and have fun. Another thing to consider with price in mind is how ethically your skates are manufactured, and what kind of manufacturers warranty they will have just in case something happens to your skates or goes unplanned.

Usually, when skates are under $200 you can generally expect that they will be imported (assembled/manufactured overseas) and made out of synthetic materials such as vinyl or synthetic leather (also called "vegan" leather or described as "vegan" by many manufacturers.) Typically we can expect imported/vinyl synthetic skates to have a much shorter lifespan than a USA made, handmade or genuine leather or suede skate boot.

Usually, when skates are over $200 you can generally expect that they will be USA made or handmade, and made out of genuine materials such as suede or flat leather.

Now that we know what inconsistencies in price mean in roller skates, let's take a mini personality quiz to determine specifically what might suit us best as we browse the Pigeon's Roller Skate Shop website.

I want to skate because...

A) I'm curious about skating, but have never done it before. I saw someone doing it and it looked fun. I want to try it but might not skate a whole lot. I don't know how to skate yet and am not 100% sure if skating is the hobby for me, but I am interested.

B) I'm really excited and inspired to start skating and I have big goals. I may not know how to skate yet or might have minimal skills, but I want to do one or more of a specific discipline of skating like Outdoor Skating, Skate Parks, Roller Derby or Dance Skating. I have done some research and need help narrowing down my choices. I have decided that this is my new goal to accomplish this year or hobby.

C) I used to roller skate A LOT when I was a kid or teenager and might have skate skills from a specific discipline of roller skating. I'm really inspired and excited to get rolling again the way I used to. I will probably skate outside mostly but might go inside too sometimes. Maybe I will probably skate inside mostly but might go outside too sometimes. I haven't skated in years but I used to know how/know how to skate. I would consider myself someone who feels safe and comfortable already on roller skates, who is proficient in one or more skate disciplines.

If you answered A:

You are the curious roller skater! You match well with a skate under $200. Here are three great choices under $200 for you, all of these mentioned are searchable on our website. Our first and best-recommended match for you is the SureGrip Fame Package with Outdoor Wheels, available in either white or black. These are really comfortable and durable. They run two sizes down from your regular ladies shoe size or match your regular mens shoe size. Our second recommendation for you would be the Moxi Beach Bunny Package available in 5 different color ways. These skates are a great way to get a really fashion-forward roll from the Moxi Brand on a budget. These run a half size to a full size down from your regular ladies shoe size, or can match your mens shoe size. Impala Roller Skates (available in a whole variety of colors) are our third recommendation for you. These are great to learn on. They come with an awesome price point and with wheels made out of the right material for rolling. These are a much better choice vs a Chicago skate or other choice from a major sporting goods store but know they might not last you forever. Typically, these match your regular ladies shoe size or in some cases can run one size down. For mens sizes in Impala's make sure you order two sizes up and consult their sizing chart to double-check.

If you answered B:

You are the ambitious roller skater! You match well with a skate around $200, or just over $200. Here are two great choices for you all viewable on our website that we love. The first is the SureGrip Fame Outdoor Package which is just shy of the $200 price point available in either white or black. These are really comfortable and durable. They run two sizes down from your regular ladies shoe size or match your regular mens shoe size. The second is the Moxi Lolly Outdoor Package which is special because it is that handmade goodness we talked about earlier! The kind of handmade goodness that will last you a decade or more if you take care of them properly. That means regular maintenance (being nice to skate hardware and taking care when cleaning or changing things) and leather care (like brushing or cleaning). These typically run 1-1.5 sizes down from your regular ladies shoe size or match your mens shoe size.

If you answered C:

You are the avid roller skater! You match well with a skate in the $299 and up price range. Here are three choices for you that we love all viewable on our website. The first is the Moxi Lolly Outdoor Package which is special because it is that handmade goodness we talked about earlier! The kind of handmade goodness that will last you a decade or more if you take care of them properly. That means regular maintenance (being nice to skate hardware and taking care when cleaning or changing things) and leather care (like brushing or cleaning) these typically run 1-1.5 sizes down from your regular ladies shoe size or match your mens shoe size. The second is the Jack Boot which is ALSO special because it is that handmade goodness as the Moxi Lolly... but extra supportive, super durable and extremely customizable. Build your package with our online drop-down menus for everything from toe stop to boot color. These are an ideal choice for folks who are already familiar with the break-in process of a regular or stiffer leather roller skate boot or need extra support for lengthy distances, long hours at the rink or in the skate park. They share the same sizing as the Moxi Lolly's and also run 1-1.5 sizes down from your regular ladies shoe size or match your mens shoe size. The third is the Custom Antik AR2 Skate Package which also, you guessed it... is special because it's handmade goodness too. Hailed as the premier choice in Roller Derby and Park Skating, our online site gives you endless options for customization of this truly dreamy skate. Extremely lightweight, comfortable and responsive, this is a great skate for skaters who mean business. We recommend ordering 2-2.5 sizes down from your regular ladies shoe size or your same mens shoe size.

Hope this helps you find your perfect pair of skates!
